The Linux Operating SystemLinux is a complete operating system just like Windows is. I've used it and found it very easy to use. Here are what I consider the advantages and disadvantages of this operating system. Advantages of LinuxCost - Linux is open source software and it is free to obtain. When you purchase a laptop with Windows installed, the cost of that operating system is included in the price of the computer. Security - The security aspect of Linux is much stronger than that of Windows. The Linux operating system has been around since the early nineties and has managed to stay secure in the realm of widespread viruses, spyware, keylogging theft and adware for all these years. Software - There are many software choices and what's more they are free! Hardware - Linux doesn't take up nearly as much memory as Windows, and therefore is perfect for those computers with a SSD where space is limited. It also runs faster than Windows. Disadvantages of Linux: Understanding - Becoming familiar with the Linux operating system requires patience as well as a strong learning curve. You must have the desire to read and figure things out on your own, rather than having everything done for you. I've seen frustrated people on the road with a Linux operating system where WiFi all of a sudden stops working. If you had a Windows machine you could take it into one of the many computer shops and have it fixed pretty easily. But with a Linux machine you are either going to have to figure out the problem yourself or reinstall the entire system. Compatibility - Because of its free nature, Linux is sometimes behind the curve when it comes to brand new hardware compatibility. It does not have as much of a corporate backing as the Windows and MacIntosh operating system does. Suppose you plug your brand new camera in the USB port and nothing happens? Its not like you could bring it to you local computer shop and have them fix it. |
